As they finished breakfast, Joe looked speculatively at Cal. “Can you ride a quad?”

Cal rolled his eyes. “Ranch kid, remember?”

“I’ve got to check the line and sheep in the far meadow.”

“I’ll come with.” Cal cleared the table, placing the empty plates in the dishwasher.

Joe watched him work, musing that his mama would have appreciated Cal’s tidy ways. He poured two tall glasses of tea, chugging his down almost in one swallow. He sighed and looked up to see Cal staring at him. Cal pinked.

“What?” Joe asked.

“Nothing.” Cal choked as he tried to drink hastily.

Joe couldn’t help feeling smug as he turned away. Someone was just as horny as Joe was, despite the fact they’d already blown each other.

“Where is your rifle?” he said, changing the subject before his cock took over and he bent Cal over the kitchen table.

Cal smirked, letting Joe know his private thoughts weren’t that private anymore. “By the door. I left it there in case…”

No need for explanation. They both knew trouble would come sooner or later.

Joe handed over Cal’s rifle. “Come on, we’ve work to do.” Joe wasn’t letting Cal out of sight all day. “We’ll take one quad.”

“Does that mean I can snuggle against you?” Cal smirked.

Joe’s cock liked that idea. Joe told it to pipe down.

As they rode along the fence line looking for breaks, it didn’t escape Joe that if hunters were trying to kill him, there was little he could do to stop them. The back of his neck itched at the thought.

“Dude.” Cal interrupted his inward panic.

“Yeah?”

“You’ve just gone past a break in the fence.”

Joe stopped the quad and looked over his shoulder. Cal pointed to where the wire had broken.

“Sorry, I was daydreaming.”

Cal snorted. “More like panicking someone was about to shoot us.”

Joe paused as he dismounted from the quad bike. “How the fuck did you know that?”

“I can hear you,” Cal sang.

Joe gave him a sour look. “You really are an asshole sometimes, aren’t you?”

“That’s Mr. Asshole to you.” Cal gave him an awkward bow and got off the quad. He hunkered down by the break in the fence. “It’s just a break. It doesn’t look like it was cut.”

“How did you get in?”

“A break farther up. You really should maintain your fence better.”

Joe pressed his lips together, resisting the urge to snap at Cal, but then the young man smiled apologetically.

“I guess, with visiting your daddy, there are never enough hours in the day.”

“No.” Joe remembered he wasn’t the only one with troubles and changed the subject. “Did you bring your gloves?”

“Yeah, and I found wire cutters in the barn.”

“You repair this hole, and I’ll do that one before it gets any worse.” Joe pointed farther down to where the wire was dangerously frayed. Joe watched Cal for a moment, approving of the swift and efficient way he worked. Then he concentrated on his own repairs.

They worked along the line until they reached a larger gap in the fence.

“This is where I came in.
